There are plenty of common myths floating around about almost everything under the sun. We see evidence of these misconceptions all over the place. Some of the oldest and most well-known myths are still floating around today. Below is a pretty good list of some of the lies that we’ve been fed for years by our parents and caregivers.

Common Myths:

  • If you make a goofy expression and the wind changes, your face is bound to stay that way.

  • You’ll ruin your eyes if you sit too close to the TV

  • You lose most of your heat through the top of your head

  • Cracking your knuckles leads to arthritis

It’s no secret that we’ve believed all kinds of things that aren’t true. So, why should hair loss be any different? For centuries, people have believed myths and misconceptions regarding the loss of hair and in today’s blog, we’re going to look at some of the most popular ones.

Myth #1 – Hair Loss is Only Passed Down Through the Mother’s Side

While it’s true that the hair loss gene is stronger when it’s passed through the X chromosome (the female chromosome), but genes that cause hair loss can be passed on to children through both men and women. Essentially, the way genetics work it’s a 50/50 chance of receiving the hair loss DNA from your parents. If one has thin hair and the other has thick hair, you have a a 50/50 chance. However, if both parents have hair loss your odds of losing your hair increase significantly. This doesn’t mean that hair loss is a predetermined fàit accomplí. We have seen many situations where one brother has lost all of their hair early in life and the other retains a thick full head of hair.

Myth #2 – Wearing a Hat Can Cause Hair to Fall Out Faster

This is, perhaps, great news for those men who enjoy wearing a baseball cap every now and then. However, it is terrible news for kids in Australia who are forced to wear hats every lunch time, recess and sports event. If wearing hats caused hair loss Australia is looking at a future nation of baldness.

Suffice to say, hats are not the cause of hair loss and they’re doing nothing to harm the growth of your hair. What they do assist with is protect your scalp from the sun if you have very short hair, they can be a great fashion accessory (especially for all the women on Melbourne cup day), and practically keep the sun from you eyes. The good news is that hat wearing will not cause hair loss.

What does potentially cause hair loss is wearing a turban. This is caused mainly due to how tight the hair is tied underneath the turban, not because of the turban itself. It’s not uncommon for male Sikh’s to experience hair loss in a very defined way. It’s almost as if they have a straight line across their front hair line and the sides of their head. The tension on the frontal hairs from the man bun under the turban is the culprit.

Myth #3 – Using Hair Gel and Hairspray Causes Baldness

Though this myth has definitely been believed by many people over the years, it’s simply not true. If it was true, can you imagine the lawsuits against some of the biggest global cosmetics companies in the world? They would stand to lose millions of dollars! These companies spent countless dollars on research to produce the best and healthist products for our hair and also research to determine if use will cause any negative side effects, like causing baldness. Some have spouted the idea that the pores get plugged up by the gel simply doesn’t wash with science. Using gel and hairspray do nothing to cause you to lose your hair or speed up the process of balding. Hair loss, for the most part, is caused by internal biological, genetic issues. Not anything you might put on your head like gel or other styling products.

Here’s a tip - Gel often is a wet look product. If you are losing your hair, these are the type of products to avoid as it will cause your hair to look thinner because it binds the hair together and exposes more scalp. It doesn’t cause hair loss, but it does make your hair look thinner!

Myth #4 – Diet Affects Hair Loss

Though your existing hair is definitely affected by the amount of nutrients that you get in your diet, there is no evidence for a poor diet causing hair to fall out.
